about

Recorded May 1992 - October 1994 at The Cement Trap, Brooklyn, NY, and Meatlocker Studio, Norwalk, CT. Initially released on cassette and later as a very limited edition CD (20 copies?) Remastered December 2020 at Savage Midrange Audio Playroom, Alexandria, VA.

WHAT DID THEY SAY?
"From the harsh and piercing tones of the opener ('Crack Side Out'), to the hypnosis-inducing faux urban tribalism of 'Experimental Populace' (which reminds slightly of early CABARET VOLTAIRE), to the lovely 4AD-ish 'Sea Sing Sleep', NORTHERN MACHINE are adept at creating mood and texture. With a great ear for subtlety, Gillis and Warford mingle post-industrial electronic sounds, dark ambient soundtrack elements, and solid production into a wholly inviting blend." - Todd Zachritz / Godsend magazine

"This is a cool release by a personal fave of mine from the independent cassette scene. One side of the tape is aggro dance electronics: strange noises and vocal tape snippets. Very strong material, hard edged, rhythmic industrial. The B-side of the tape features a more sedate nonrhythmic dose of electronics: long grinds and vibrating aerial tones. Industrial new age--or is it angry ambience? Highly recommended." - Matt Howarth / Sonic Curiosity

about

Northern Machine

Pat Gillis developed Northern Machine in the mid-80's as an outgrowth of his interests in film sound and electronic music. Bill Warford soon arrived and pushed it towards an emphatic level of expression, under the auspices of legendary Audiophile Tapes label-Yoda Carl Howard. Some 25 years and 8 releases later, Northern Machine is still building upon that original foundation of vision. ... more
